Senior Girls Footy – “The story so far”

Round 1

The team travelled to Leongatha on 30/4 to kick off the 2019 campaign. The only school bold enough to take us on was Mary Mackillop SC. Many predicted a one-sided affair and that’s how it played out, with a crushing victory to WSC 15.11. 101 to no score.

The girls played a fast-paced brand of team footy and the coaching staff gave everyone an opportunity to get involved. WSC had nine different goal scorers on the day with Felicity Tack kicking four. Such was WSC’s dominance that even Sid “I only play backline” Mullins managed to put one through the big sticks!

Assistant coach Gemma Thomas took the 3QT team talk and inspired the girls to greater heights. The banter on the bench was solid all day, although the mathematics skills when trying to calculate our score was less impressive. It was a fun day, capped off by the team’s ‘spiritual leader’ Sid treating us with some tunes on the bus ride home.
Well played everyone!

Best Players:

Round 2

We had some big inclusions and a strong looking team for the Gippsland championship round at Traralgon on 21/5. We were fixtured against Lowanna and Lavalla, not sure what to expect, but confident nonetheless.

Both matches proved to be dominant performances and easy wins to Wonthaggi Secondary College. Like last round, the girls played some great team footy, working so well together any observers would have suspected weeks of training and preparation. We have of course trained zero times, which is testament to the girls’ instinct for the game.

In both games the Wonthaggi Secondary College on-ball brigade was dominant in clearing the ball from the centre. The ‘all-Sadler’ half-forward line lead at the ball-carrier with perfect timing, the backline was resolute whenever required, and our forwards managed to convert several chances. The dominant display allowed for the team to be rotated around to give everyone a go and everyone played their role for the team perfectly.

WSC: 5. 3. 33
Lavalla: 0. 1. 1

WSC: 4. 7. 31
Lowanna: 0. 0. 0

Thanks to all of the girls for your organisation, effort and behaviour, Gemma said you’re a pleasure to coach! Next the team will head to Melbourne in Term 3 to take on the best schools in the state. Can’t wait to see how we go!
