Cross Country Report

On Thursday 33 students from Wonthaggi Secondary College took on the hills at Lardner park to compete in the Gippsland Region Cross Country. The day started out bitterly cold, however the sun soon came out and conditions proved perfect for running. The year 7 girls were first to hit the 3km course. Baia Pugh had a cracking run, winning by 500m and clocking the fastest female time for all age groups across the day. She was accompanied by her team mates Sophie Foster (19th), Lily Mewett (31st) and Bailey Dusheer (35th), and their team placed 6th overall.

The year 7 boys just missed a medal, placing 4th in the teams event, with Beau Ransom and Callum McLeod coming 9th and 12th respectively, and qualifying for the state championships. Fletcher Hill (20th), Jye Sutherland (22nd) and Zac Mabilia (35th) rounded out their team.

The 14 years girls were very strong on the day, placing 2nd in the teams, only missing 1st by 1 point! Leititia Pugh pulled out a solid performance and finished 3rd, Lexi Walton (5th), Jordi Vanderkolk (11th) and Ruby Brosnan (15th).

Jake Dennerly was first across the line for Wonthaggi Secondary College in 17th for the 14 years boys, followed by Luca Gleeson (20th) and Jed Rosenow (24th), their team placing 6th. Kiara Brusamarello ran 7th and earned her place at state in the 15 years girls, followed by Larni Sutherland (20th), Alannah Harland (21st) and Alicia Smith (37th).

The 15 years boys had three state qualifiers; Ashton Hewitson (8th), Ainsley Dunker (9th) and Jacob Timmermans (13th), as well as Jack Speakman (20th), Lachlan Watson (29th), Leit Rivers (33rd), Matthew Clarke (35th) and Luke Bramley (37th) as part of the team. The boys finished 3rd overall.

The senior boys had to tackle a 5km course, running up the infamous Lardner Park hill not once, but twice! Michael Vrandenburg placed 34th in the 16 years age group, Pauly Spencer 25th and Andrew Thomas 14th in the 17-20’s.

A great effort was made by everyone who participated. Good luck to the 11 runners representing Wonthaggi Secondary College at State Cross Country first week back in term 3.
