Year 11 VCAL Mentor Panel
On Thursday July 24th, 12 local representatives came and presented their work history and work pathways to the VCAL Literacy students, by way of a speed dating model.
Organised by Karena Kerr from the South Gippsland LLEN, members from a range of local agencies, careers and providers, from public to private, all came together to share their experiences of the working life.
Students had done some work in class on types of questions applicable to specific careers, as well as having prepared some generic questions for careers outside of their understanding or interest areas.
While students were clearly nervous and unsure at first, within a short space of time, students were smiling, engaging in real conversation, and clearly overcoming personal barriers by speaking to people they did not know.
The program was such a success, evidence by not only the buzz in the room, but also from reading the student Evaluations afterwards, that Karena and I are already in discussion about how we can run this with the Year 12 group, as well as how we might run this next year.
A big thank you to Karena Kerr, all panel members and also to the class for being such wonderful ambassadors for the VCAL program as well as for our College.
