Music and Maths incursion
On Wednesday 31st July, mathematician Professor Arun Ram and pianist and past WSC student Josh Hooke visited Dudley Campus from the University of Melbourne. What links a professor of mathematics and an amazing performer on the piano? Quite a bit, it turns out.
Professor Ram shared with students many stories of mathematicians and famous composers in the 1800s who were friends, and even sometimes got married to each other. Students heard about how mathematicians and composers inspired each other. As Professor Ram told his stories, Josh accompanied on the piano. At the end of the presentation, we were treated to a solo performance by Josh of Frederic Chopin’s Etude in Ab Major. It was wonderful to see one of our own past students performing at such a high standard.
It was also interesting to hear about Professor Ram’s initial plans to become a violinist, and how he eventually discovered his passion for maths.
The day became even more exciting when WIN Television visited WSC to film the event. You can watch the news segment, including interviews with current WSC students Dylan Cleary and Jake Dennerley, on the below link.
Thank you to the University of Melbourne and National Science Week who made this event possible.
