Tournament of Minds
This year Wonthaggi Secondary College entered four teams in the Tournament of Minds which is a problem solving program for teams to solve demanding open ended challenges. There were 26 WSC students involved from Year 7 to 10. The students had six weeks to prepare for this event which has involved many meetings after school and lunchtimes. We entered the students in three categories including Social Science, Arts and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics).
The four teams competed admirably at the Regional Finals with our Social Science Team making it through to the State Finals on the 8th of September. Our Arts Team received a special judges award for their unique approach to the interpretation of the long term problem.
The Social Science Team will be competing at Latrobe University in Bundoora. They have spent the last two weeks preparing for the three hour challenge which can be quite an exhaustive process. Their facilitator Aiden Harris is confident that the team will give other teams a run for their money despite them being a team made up of only Year 7s and 8s. Most other teams competing at the State Final will have students from Year 7 through to Year 10. We wish them the best of luck for the State Final.
