Intermediate Boys Netball

The Intermediate Boys Netball Team attended the Victorian State Championships held at Jells Park in week 8. The team was previously successful at the Division level defeating Korumburra in the final, then again at Regional level going through undefeated.

The 8 teams were split into two pools with the first game against Holy Trinity Horsham the boys had an easy win 24 to 1. This is was a good chance to get a few systems right and move players around, Fraser West and Seth Williamson were unstoppable in defence. Game 2 was against Bentleigh Secondary College with a tough battle and a tall shooter for Josh Williams to complete against the boys prevailed with a 21 to 17 win. The final pool game against Galan College Wangaratta was a chance to save the legs and go through the motions in preparation for the finals, a win 16 to 8 with Archie Paxton with plenty of mid court pressure and Malachy O’Flynn with strong drives hitting the circle.

The semi-final was against Merbein P-10 who travelled over 6 hours to get to Melbourne. The boys played high quality netball, they were patient and made minimal errors, Max Walton with a big engine running down the line while playing Centre.

The Grand Final against Bentleigh again saw the lead change multiple times, Wonthaggi were up by 4 at half time in a low scoring affair, Jenson Garnham had great timing to pop out for a feed from the circle. Bentleigh came out in the third quarter to score 7 in a row with the ¾ time margin having Wonthaggi down by 3. Brodie Mabilia stepped up in defence taking out opportunities for Bentleigh’s tall shooter, while Alex Maxwell and Mitch Hewitson were controlled and efficient in attack. Minimising mistakes and converting turnovers in the last saw the momentum swing back to Wonthaggi, the crowd was on side and witnessed a huge victory.

Well done to all players, great achievement!
