Visiting Guest Artist – Jordan Murray
On Thursday 5th and Friday 6th September, jazz trombonist Jordan Murray ran workshops with the Wonthaggi Secondary College Concert Bands and Big Band. There was a lot of fun and excitement as students were inspired by Jordan’s teaching and playing. In the Concert Bands, Jordan showed us important rhythm and articulation are for an audience to hear a really impressive group. Jordan showed the Big Band how to use a jazz approach to phrasing, to make sure that they sound cool and not daggy!
On the Friday night, all of the bands put on a concert at the Wonthaggi Workmen’s Club. The enthusiastic audience was treated to a variety of styles, from jazz, to marches, and even to a bit of Queen. The music teachers even got up to perform in a jazz quintet, featuring Jordan Murray as a soloist.
Our students are fortunate to have benefited from Jordan Murray’s experience as a performer and teacher. Jordan currently teaches at Monash University, but has performed in many commercial settings, including on TV shows such as Dancing With The Stars and Australian Idol. Jordan was also kind enough to invite some of our senior students to visit him at Monash University, and experience what life is like as a tertiary music student.
Thanks to Jordan Murray, our team of music teachers and the Wonthaggi Workmen’s Club for an outstanding Guest Artist program this year.
